How to configure TikTok two-factor authentication on iPhone

TikTok two-factor authentication on iPhone is the extra security step that keeps someone out of your account even if they know your password. If you want to turn it on, this article shows the exact place to set it up in TikTok on iPhone and the fastest way to fix the common sign-in and verification problems that block the setup.

Quick fix

Open TikTok, go to Profile > Menu > Settings and privacy > Security > 2-step verification, then turn on Text message and Email. If you want the strongest setup, also add an authenticator app after you confirm your phone number and email are working.

Why this happens

TikTok ties two-factor authentication to the account’s security settings, not to the iPhone itself. If your phone number or email is outdated, not verified, or already tied to another login issue, TikTok blocks the setup until you fix the recovery details first. A failed app update, a stale session, or an SMS delivery problem also stops the verification code from arriving.

How to fix it

  1. Open the security menu in TikTok.
Launch TikTok on your iPhone and tap Profile in the bottom-right corner. Tap the Menu button in the top-right, then choose Settings and privacy. Tap Security and open 2-step verification.

  2. Turn on the built-in verification methods.
Select Text message and enter your iPhone number exactly as it appears in your account. Then select Email and confirm the address attached to your TikTok login. These two options are the fastest way to lock the account and restore access if one method fails.

  3. Add an authenticator app for stronger protection.
In 2-step verification, choose Authenticator app and follow the on-screen setup. TikTok displays a setup key or QR code; use it in your authenticator app, then enter the six-digit code it generates. This gives you a backup code source even when your text messages are delayed.

  4. Verify your phone number and email before you finish.
If TikTok asks for a code, enter it immediately and complete the confirmation. If the code never arrives, check that your iPhone can receive regular SMS messages and that your email inbox is not full. Use the exact address tied to the TikTok account, not a different one you check more often.

  5. Refresh TikTok if the security page will not load.
Close TikTok completely, then reopen it and try the setup again. If the page still hangs, update TikTok from the App Store and try once more. A stale app session commonly blocks the security screen from saving changes.

  6. Save your recovery details before you log out.
Once 2-step verification is on, confirm that you can still access the phone number, email, and authenticator app you chose. Write down the backup codes if TikTok shows them and keep them somewhere secure. If you lose all three, account recovery becomes much slower.

Common error messages

“Verification code not received”
This means TikTok sent the code, but your iPhone did not get the SMS or your email inbox is not showing the message.

“Something went wrong”
This means TikTok could not save the security change, usually because the app session is stale or the network connection failed.

“This number is already in use”
This means the phone number you entered is tied to another account or security setup and cannot be added again until it is removed there.

When this means it’s a bigger problem

If 2-step verification fails on a freshly updated TikTok app, with a working phone number, a working email, and a stable connection, the problem is on TikTok’s side or with the account itself. The same is true if you can sign in but TikTok will not save any security changes, or if every verification code fails even after you request a new one and wait for delivery.
